SUBJECT: "Across 110 Street," mixed by Phil Nicolo, receives Grammy Award
Hello friends,
Our own Phil Nicolo is a Grammy recipient in the Best Salsa/Merengue Album category for his work on "Across 110 Street" by the Spanish Harlem Orchestra featuring Ruben Blades (Libertad Records). He has previously been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Phil, who mastered both "Skimming" and "Tonight I Drink You All," is an independent producer, engineer and co-founder of Ruffhouse Records which he started with brother Joe from their home outside of Philadelphia. Known as "The Butcher Brothers," they have gone on to sell over one hundred million records to date, and have established themselves as a force in all genres of music production. A short list of the diverse artists Phil has worked with includes Lauryn Hill; The Fugees; Cypress Hill; Pete Yorn; Train; The Roots; Billy Joel; the Rolling Stones; Aerosmith; Sting; The Police; John Lennon; Bob Dylan; Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails); The Moby Area One tour featuring Moby, Incubus, and Outkast; Luscious Jackson; The Pretenders; Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam; The Mighty Mighty Bosstones; Dishwalla; Cibo Matto; Urge Overkill; Anthrax; The Cult; Depeche Mode; and many others. Phil will again be working with Engine Company as recording continues for the new Lesley Gore album, her first in more than thirty years. Engine Company's Blake Morgan is producing, and the record features songs from Mike, Blake, Shimmerplanet's John Fischer, and, of course, Lesley. The band -- Jonathan Ellinghaus (drums), John Turner (bass), Blake Morgan (piano), and Mike (guitars) -- features the lineup from "Skimming" displaying a lush, smoky side of their musical personalities.
If you missed Mike on Mixed Bag with Pete Fornatale, you can catch the hour-long interview and performances online at www.wfuv.org. Click on WFUV archives and enter "Mike Errico" in the search line. Pete was most gracious and inspiring. Enjoy!
